Lighthouse: A Night of Local House Music from Mother Records – San Francisco, California – 09/29/12

Lighthouse: A Night of Local House Music from Mother Records |
|
| When |
Saturday, September 29, 2012
|
| Where |
1151 Folsom St
(between 7th St. and 8th St.) San Francisco, California, USA 94103 If Humphrey Bogart and Edgar Allan Poe could bridge the centuries and have a drink together, Raven would be the place. The newest entrant on the San Francisco bar/lounge scene, located in the booming old SOMA-Folsom Street corridor, Raven is a 21st century update of the shadowy, brooding hangouts from film noir classics like The Maltese Falcon and Dark Passage where secrets are shared. |
| Other Info | For nearly two years, Mother (pronounced /ˈmɒθər/, a person who studies moths) Records has been peppering Bay Area nights with parties focused on delivering high-quality house music, attracting good folks beautiful on the inside and out, and emanating positive vibes in a fun-only atmosphere. The boys have gone underground with late-night beach parties, dropped bombs for college kids at the Berkeley co-ops, and continue to host Spilt Milk, a monthly event held every third Thursday at Milk Bar on Haight Street. All the while, the gentlemen have been flooding the internets with mixes and original productions, which you can scope out on their website, Motherrecords.org. Now, on September 29, the scholarly quintet are set to metamorphose with a party qualitatively distinct from any they’ve thrown before. That night, the group’s four producers will take the stage at Raven on Folsom Street for their very first Saturday night event at a downtown club. Like every Mother event, there is absolutely no cover, and the price tag for your night will be further diminished by Raven’s eminently reasonable drink prices ($5 wells, $5 drafts, $6 Long Islands). The Mother crew will be blasting beats upstairs, although there will also be seating, a DJ, and two bars serving speciality cocktails in the downstairs area. Raven is on Folsom between 7th and 8th streets, on the same block as Icon Ultra Lounge, Cat Club, and Bloodhound, and a short walk to 1015 Folsom, The Endup, Monarch, and other SOMA nightclubs. -Mountaincount- Mountaincount (a.k.a. Taylor Harrison) is the extra-extra-large patriarch of the Mother clan. His bass-centric house productions are crafted with a deft touch, straddling the line between deep and tech. His dancefloor selections occupy a similar range of the spectrum, with a goofy go-for-broke attitude. Whether Mountaincount is playing an original or a selection, he is always offering a headfirst dive into the subversive and post-modern nether regions of the house scene with a smile. -Wentworth- A member of now-defunct hipster-pop trio Butterfly Bones, and current drummer for synth-glam threesome Pixel Memory, Joe Gray (a.k.a. Joe Cray) has been lending his percussive talents to the Bay Area music scene since his arrival from Louisiana in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Joe’s dalliance with 808s, bass, and deep house began shortly after his arrival in the region, and in the last few years has blossomed into a passionate love affair. Joe is a master of twisted productions, often juxtaposing eerie and hypnotic melodies with speaker-rattling kicks and punchy drumwork. -King’s Ransom- The younger of the vertically-gifted Harrison brothers, Hayden has been producing and DJing up and down the coast of California since 2008. Earlier this year, Hayden delivered the party-starting track “Vibes” alongside a track from his brother on their Sibling Rivalry EP. Also in 2012, Hayden dropped a bootleg of “Caught Your Fever,” and word has it that the boy has a stockpile of original productions on the verge of mass dissemination. -Nil- Zero, zilch, o, ought, naught, empty set, null, zip, nothing, nada, none. The elusive producer/DJ known as Nil (a.k.a. Neel Rao) has been quietly amassing experience matching beats since his teenage years growing up in the Bay. With professional training as an electrical engineer, computer scientist, and gourmet barista, Neel delivers intelligent productions and sagacious sets that provide enlightened entertainment to those fortunate enough to partake. | Other Info | Spilt Milk is going bigger than ever this September, with rising Bay$$ Area stars Nick Monaco and Sepehr ready to blare the bass and blast the beats on Thursday the 20th. These two youngsters are known to bring some serious dancefloor mayhem, so don't miss your chance to see them free of charge over at Upper Haight's only place to hear loud-ass tunage, Milk Bar. Per usual, your boys Taylor Fife and Shaky Premise will be getting things warmed up in the early hours. We're all about supporting the borderline-poverty lifestyle at Spilt Milk, so you know we'll be offering a selection of discounted drinks. (Stay tuned for deets). And, like last time, we're teaming up with the good folks over at NightLife at the Academy of Sciences to deliver free booze to those who attend both events. NightLife on the 20th will feature the bass-and-dinosaur-loving dubstep producer Mochipet and D33J of Shlohmo's Wedidit Collective. All you gotta do is show your NightLife ticket to the bartender, and a shot on the house will immediately appear. -Nick Monaco- (http://www.facebook.com/nick.monaco.music) Nick Monaco is still a youngin, but in his fresh 21 years he has somehow managed to pack in copious DJ and production experience. He first began scratching at 13, and at 15 took his first plunge into the world of beatmaking for local hip-hop and R&B acts. As a teenager, he dedicated much of his time to perfecting the art of turntablism, which culminated in his being featured in DJ Qbert’s instructional scratch glossary Scratchlopedia Breaktannica. Despite his love for breaks and beats, by his late teens, Nick could not resist the inexorable pulse of house music. The wild and oft-debased revelry of house music dance floors led Nick to discover his true calling: to get asses shaking and hips swerving to deep, bass-heavy four-to-the-floor. Nick kicked off 2012 by releasing "Long Kiss Goodnight (Soul Clap Edit)" on Dirtybird's stellar Hatched compilation, and has been driving dancefloors absolutely bonkers all summer long with "This One, That One," co-produced by Kill Frenzy. Last time Nick showed up at Milk Bar he nearly set the place on fire, so don't miss out on this chance to see the boy strut his stuff in an intimate setting absolutely free of charge. -Sepehr- (http://www.facebook.com/SepehrMusicPage) Sepehr has been righteously slaying the dancefloor this summer with a bone-crushing bass onslaught courtesy of his killer tune "Apple Bottoms," released on Worthy's Anabatic records. Since last year, this up-and-coming producer has dropped a string of booty house hits, starting with his vicious debut EP, Tech Dolphin. The bass will be palpable as midnight approaches, so make sure you're front and center, and ready to groove, when Sepehr starts to twiddle those knobs and faders. -Shaky Premise- Take me out, tonight. -Taylor Fife- To die by your side, is such a heavenly way to die. -Jurassic NightLife- (http://www.facebook.com/events/305264129572339/) Grab a drink and conjure up your childhood passion for dinosaurs this week with prehistoric specimens, pop culture, and art. Nineties classic Jurassic Park comes to Golden Gate Park, with a screening in the Academy’s east garden. At the Conservatory of Flowers’ sketch-o-saurus dino drawing station, create a prehistoric masterpiece inspired by their Plantosaurus Rex exhibit. Then watch the San Francisco Botanical Garden feed its carnivorous plants, and dissect your very own ancient plant whose lineage dates back to the age of the dinosaurs. Cartoonist Michael Capozolla will transform you into the dinosaur of your dreams, and Academy herpetologist David Blackburn will be on-hand with prehistoric specimens from our research collections, discussing fact and fiction behind the connection between dinosaurs and lizards. Plus, catch Dinosaurs Alive! in 3D, now showing in the Forum Theater. D33J of the WeDidIt Collective DJs in the coral reef, and dubstep artist Mochipet, who’s upcoming release is aptly named “Rawr Means I Love You,” takes the Piazza stage. You won’t miss him, he’s the guy in the Godzilla suit. Save your ticket and present it at Milk Bar for a free shot!! |
